Coastal First Nations and Great Bear Initiative (CFN-GBI)

CFN-GBI is a unique alliance of nine BC First Nations. They work to promote community self-sufficiency and sustainable economic development on BC’s North and Central Coast and Haida Gwaii.

Project

Lead and execute a digital campaign to put pressure on Canadian senators, elected officials, and the public to encourage them to pass the Oil Tanker Moratorium Act before the end of the 2019 legislative session. The passage of the Oil Tanker Moratorium Act comes almost half a century after the BC Legislature and the House of Commons each unanimously resolved, in 1971 and 1972 respectively, to oppose oil tanker traffic on the Pacific north coast, and after the spill of the Nathan E. Stewart tugboat which spilt diesel and engine lubricants into the waters of Heiltsuk territory, impacting critical marine and habitats and harvesting sites.

The creative (social media assets) and landing page were executed by CFN-GBI’s agencies on record while I focused on the campaign’s strategy, messaging and distribution.

Prior to the campaign, I completed a social media audit for the organization, analyzing their social successes and gaps and assessing what opportunities existed for their social presence in 2019 and beyond.

Results

In June of 2019, the bill was passed by the Canadian Senate and signed into law shortly thereafter.
